Journal and expense corrections now stay in sync

You can now carry account and tax category edits made on a journal entry back to the original expense, and correcting an expense updates its journal entry in place under the same number.

What's new

  • The date, amount, and payment source always follow the original expense. Accounts and tax categories stay consistent whichever side you edit.
  • The journal editor has a new "Also apply to the original expense" option that writes your account and tax category changes back to the expense.

- Tax categories are applied only when the tax rate is the same.
- If the entry is split across multiple accounts, the account is not written back.

  • When you correct an expense, its journal entry is no longer deleted and recreated. It is corrected under the same number, and the department, item, tags, manually edited description, and manually attached documents are kept. The previous version is saved to the history.
  • If the journal entry was split across multiple accounts, you'll be asked to confirm before it is rebuilt.
  • When a journal entry disappears because its source changed (deleting an expense or receipt, canceling a payment, undoing a reconciliation, transfer, receipt of payment, or advance, or replacing an automatically created entry), a correction and deletion history is kept, just as with manual deletion.

Who it's for

  • Businesses using Expenses and the Journal in Accounting

How to use it

  1. Open a journal entry created from an expense in the Journal and change the account or tax category.
  2. Select "Also apply to the original expense" and save.
  3. To change an expense's date, amount, or payment source, edit and save the expense as usual. The journal entry is corrected under the same number.
